Surface Design

After completing my diploma in Fashion Design and working as a seamstress for a local baby bedding company, I found a love of fabric which turned into a love of creating repeating patterns and cohesive collections.

Below are a some of the collections I’ve created over the years. Click the links below to see my full catalogue.

PATTERN SET

Baked

My Baked pattern set is a collection of warm, comforting, and delicious-looking designs inspired by baking and doughnuts. These simple yet intricate patterns bring out the sweet and subtle elements of baking and bring an air of creativity and fun. One of the highlights is the classic Donut pattern—inspired by the classic cake-like treat, this bright, playful pattern was designed for one of Jorgie Apparel's limited-edition swimsuit collections and is perfect for an array of products.

Garden Party

Garden Party is a collection of repeating patterns that capture the essence of vintage garden parties with a modern twist. The set includes four unique patterns: "Rose Garden," "Buttercup Breeze," "Peri Paint Pour," and "Rosy Rain." Each pattern features a unique color palette and design that can be used to create a variety of clothing and home decor items.

To showcase the versatility of the patterns, I have designed some simple, low detail fashion flats to use as swatches. These flats allow you to visualize how the patterns would look on clothing, making it easier to create a cohesive collection. Whether you are creating a flowy sundress, a tailored blazer, or a set of throw pillows, Garden Party has a pattern that will suit your needs.

Good Morning

This pattern set is inspired by cozy weekend mornings.

This pattern set was my first independent project after returning from a wonderful trip to the UK. It was exciting to get back to work after being off for a full month. I began by creating a moodboard and colour scheme, and then worked on the patterns. Up until now, 80% of my patterns have been made in Illustrator to change the colours easily, but the success of a hand-drawn pattern I did for Jorgie Apparel led me to complete this set 100% in ProCreate and Photoshop. As a result, I was able to create a more fluid experience that demonstrates my growth as a designer.

PATTERN SET

High by the Beach

With my living room/office décor in mind, I recoloured all my favorite patterns from this year and created a new large-scale palm leaf pattern. Since I intended to be the client of this set, I chose colours that are very soothing to me. It’s important to do something for yourself once in a while and I loved the outcome.

Jorgie Apparel requested the use of two of these patterns for their swimwear in 2022. It was a fun collaboration and was amazing to see these patterns on the runway.

Interplanetary

I started this project with some random illustrations and no idea of where I was going to go from there. I saw what I liked about my illustrations, wrote keywords on them, decided on a theme, and created a moodboard. At this time Metro Boomin and Travis Scott released albums that had very astro/space vibes and listening to them inspired me while creating these patterns. I love the juxtaposition of the childlike illustrations compared to the very modern and sophisticated elements in this cohesive collection.

I also created a 28-page booklet that tells the story of how these patterns were created and shows the patterns in their entirety. The booklet is 6” x 6” and can be sent to fabric suppliers or textile companies that could potentially license them. The following is the overview of this pattern set I included in the promotional booklet:

Interplanetary is a collection of patterns that will take you to other galaxies. As a child I had a fantasy of what outer space was. It included a variety of bright colours, interesting creatures, and a lot of excitement. Now that I’m an adult it is less exciting and more of an unknown place full of mystery and beauty. Interplanetary is a combination of my childhood fantasies and current wonderings coming together in an odd way to show the beauty as well as the ominosity of outer space.

Pool Party

A few months after finishing my degree in 2019, I challenged myself to create a set of cohesive pattern in one week, with one pattern per day. I was inspired by the approaching sunny season and wanted to create a set with the perfect juxtaposition of hand drawn and digitally drawn elements. The project began with a mood-board and vague sketching. Then each pattern was produced in whatever medium I felt worked on the day.

PATTERNS

Watercolor Mermaids

Watercolor Mermaid Scales s the first pattern I ever designed back in 2017, two years before I finished design school. I designed it in Illustrator prompted by Spoonflower's design challenge "Whimsical Watercolor Fantasy Creatures." I did not have the skillset I have now so looking back I can't believe how messy the design process was as a baby designer (the original file is over 100GB).

It is my top seller on Spoonflower with over 2500 favourites. It is also on the first page in the categories 'watercolor' and 'mermaid' on Spoonflower. I have lost count of the amount of small businesses that have used it for their products and I have also seen it replicated by many other designers and companies. To compete with other designs on spoonflower, I made a matching mermaids pattern in the same colours.
